The freshwater shrimp UK hobbyist favourite Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis, commonly known as the snowball shrimp, is a hardy, peaceful dwarf shrimp with striking white colouration that adds visual interest and natural cleaning services to planted nano aquariums. Native to freshwater streams and rivers in China, this species has become a popular choice for aquarists seeking an easy-to-keep, attractive invertebrate that thrives in a wide range of water conditions. Available for sale UK aquarists will find the snowball shrimp an excellent addition to community tanks, planted setups, and nano aquariums, where its peaceful temperament and active behaviour make it a delight to observe. Captive-bred strains, including those developed in Germany, have further enhanced the species' hardiness and colour consistency.
Snowball shrimp display a beautiful solid white to creamy-white colouration across the entire body, legs, and tail fan, creating a striking snowy appearance that stands out against dark substrates and green plants. At full adult size of around 1cm, these diminutive shrimp are perfectly proportioned and elegant. The white colouration is most intense in high-quality specimens, though some individuals may show slight translucency. Females are typically larger and more robust than males, with a curved underside for carrying eggs. Well-fed, secure specimens in optimal conditions display the most vibrant white tones, whilst stress or poor water quality can cause the colour to fade.
Native to freshwater streams and rivers in China, particularly the Zhangjiajie region from which the species name derives, Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis inhabits clear, well-oxygenated waters with abundant vegetation, biofilm, and leaf litter. These environments feature stable temperatures, moderate to neutral pH, and plenty of hiding places among rocks, wood, and aquatic plants. In the wild, these shrimp are part of a complex ecosystem, grazing on algae, biofilm, and detritus whilst serving as prey for small fish and other predators. Aquarium strains, including white varieties, are captive-bred and adapted to a wide range of water conditions.
Provide a minimum of 10 litres for a small group, though 20 litres or more is ideal for a thriving colony. Use a mature, well-filtered aquarium with stable water parameters and gentle filtration to protect delicate shrimplets. Furnish the tank with plenty of live plants such as Java moss, Java fern, Anubias, and floating plants to provide grazing surfaces and hiding places. Include driftwood, smooth rocks, and leaf litter to create additional biofilm-rich surfaces. Use a fine sand or small gravel substrate, and avoid sharp decorations that could injure the shrimp. Ensure excellent water quality with regular small water changes, and avoid drastic parameter fluctuations.
Snowball shrimp are omnivorous grazers that feed primarily on biofilm, algae, and detritus. In a mature aquarium with abundant natural foods, they may require minimal supplemental feeding. Offer specialised shrimp pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as spinach and courgette, and occasional protein-rich foods like spirulina or finely crushed flake food. Feed sparingly once every one to two days, providing only what can be consumed within a few hours. Overfeeding can degrade water quality and harm the colony. A varied, balanced diet promotes healthy moulting, vibrant colouration, and successful breeding.
Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis is peaceful, social, and constantly active, grazing on surfaces throughout the aquarium. These shrimp are most confident in groups and display natural schooling behaviour, often clustering on favoured feeding spots or plants. They are active during the day and night, making them a joy to observe. Females carry eggs under the abdomen for several weeks, fanning them regularly until shrimplets hatch. Moulting occurs regularly as the shrimp grow, and during this vulnerable period they will seek shelter until the new exoskeleton hardens. Well-maintained colonies breed readily and can quickly populate a suitable aquarium.
Compatible with other peaceful shrimp species of similar size, including other Neocaridina varieties, as well as small, non-predatory fish such as ember tetras, chili rasboras, and otocinclus. Snails make excellent tankmates and pose no threat. Avoid large or predatory fish, aggressive fish, crayfish, large loaches, and cichlids, all of which will prey on shrimp. Even supposedly peaceful fish such as bettas or gouramis may eat shrimplets or harass adults. In a shrimp-only tank, breeding success is highest and losses are minimised. Choose tankmates with great care if mixing species.
Snowball shrimp breed readily in freshwater aquariums with stable conditions. Females carry 20-40 eggs under the abdomen for approximately four weeks, after which miniature shrimplets hatch as fully formed versions of adults. Provide excellent water quality, adequate calcium for egg and exoskeleton development, and abundant hiding places for shrimplets. In a well-maintained, mature aquarium with plenty of biofilm and plant cover, shrimplets have a high survival rate. Remove predatory tankmates if breeding is desired. Colonies can grow rapidly under optimal conditions, requiring management to prevent overpopulation.
Neocaridina shrimp are sensitive to copper, ammonia, nitrite, and sudden changes in water parameters. Avoid all copper-based medications and treatments, as even trace amounts are fatal. Use a mature aquarium with a well-established biofilm before introducing shrimp. Perform small, regular water changes rather than large infrequent ones to maintain stability. Protect filter intakes with sponge pre-filters to prevent shrimplets from being sucked in. Provide adequate calcium through diet and water chemistry to support healthy moulting. This species is ideal for beginners seeking a low-maintenance, attractive, and productive freshwater invertebrate.
