The Seychelles Panchax or Playfair's Panchax (Pachypanchax playfairii), also known as the Golden Panchax, is a striking surface-dwelling killifish native to freshwater and slightly brackish streams on the granitic islands of the Seychelles. Reaching 5cm in length, this semi-aggressive species is prized for its lively surface activity and unique island-origin character. The Seychelles Panchax displays beautiful golden colouration with a slender, elongated body adorned in warm gold and bronze tones with subtle iridescence. Males are more intensely coloured than females, with more pronounced finnage and a bolder presence. The scales shimmer with a metallic lustre under subdued lighting. Females are smaller, plumper, and more subdued in colour. In a planted tank with dark substrate, the golden colours become even more vibrant and eye-catching.
Pachypanchax playfairii is found in freshwater and slightly brackish streams on the granitic islands of the Seychelles. These fish inhabit slow-moving or still waters characterised by clean, well-oxygenated water with some current, dense vegetation, and a substrate of rock, sand, and organic debris. These surface-oriented fish spend most of their time hunting at the water's surface. The habitat may tolerate slight brackishness, though the species does well in pure freshwater.
A minimum 80-litre aquarium is recommended for a pair or small group of Seychelles Panchax. Use a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate with plenty of live plants such as Vallisneria, Cryptocoryne, Java moss, and floating species like Pistia or Salvinia. Provide open swimming space near the surface, as this is a surface-oriented species. Filtration should be moderate to provide some current, which this species appreciates. A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as killifish are excellent jumpers.
As an insectivore, Pachypanchax playfairii requires a varied meaty diet of quality small frozen and live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, and other insect larvae, supplemented with high-quality micro pellets or flakes. This surface-oriented predator is well-adapted to capturing live prey at the water's surface. Feed small portions once or twice daily, removing uneaten food promptly to maintain water quality.
The Seychelles Panchax is a semi-aggressive, surface-dwelling species with a lively personality. Males may be territorial towards each other, especially in smaller tanks, and these fish are active predators that may eat very small fish or nano species. However, they are generally peaceful towards fish of similar size that occupy the middle and bottom of the tank. Most active during dawn and dusk, they spend much of their time patrolling the surface in search of food.
Suitable companions include similar-sized peaceful fish that can tolerate active, slightly boisterous tankmates, such as fast, robust community fish of comparable size and peaceful bottom dwellers large enough not to be eaten. Avoid very small fish fry or nano fish, long-finned fish, slow-moving or timid species, aggressive cichlids, and tiny shrimp or other small crustaceans likely to be eaten. Adults may eat eggs and fry, so breeding is best done in a separate tank with soft cover and frequent removal of eggs for separate incubation.
