The betta fish is one of the most popular and most misunderstood freshwater species. This guide covers everything from proper tank size to the truth about tank mates.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Dragon-scaled females are something special: the thick, metallic, armour-like scales that define the dragon trait laid over a female Halfmoon's broad tail spread, on a fish of about 6.5 cm. The scaling catches light plate by plate as she turns, an effect entirely different from ordinary iridescence — and her record makes her more sociable than most of the bettas on our books.
Listed as semi-aggressive with moderate care needs, her compatibility file is unusually generous. Approved company includes peaceful small schooling fish in a suitably sized tank, peaceful bottom-dwellers such as Corydoras in larger aquariums, snails, and peaceful shrimp with the standing caution that they can be hunted. That makes her one of the few fish in this range with a realistic path into a calm community. The exclusions still matter: other bettas, fin-nipping fish, aggressive or highly territorial species, large predators, and brightly coloured long-finned tank mates that provoke displays. Base requirements are modest — 20 litres minimum solo (size up for a community), 24–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 1–15 dGH, carnivore feeding, top-region swimming, and a watch for territorial spells.
Her community potential changes the setup conversation. If she is joining Corydoras or small schooling fish as her record permits, size the tank well beyond her 20-litre solo minimum, plant it densely, and add her last — the armoured female entering an established peace keeps her semi-aggressive instincts in check. Feeding in a community needs care too: she is a carnivore and should not be outcompeted, so target-feed her at the surface while bottom-dwellers take their own food below. Water sits at 24–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 1–15 dGH. The dragon scaling needs no special maintenance — it is genetics, not condition — but it does make her the easiest fish in the tank to spot-check at a glance.
Introduce her to an established, peaceful tank rather than the reverse, and the dragon scaling will be the highlight of the aquarium within days. Delivery across the UK by licensed live-animal courier — live arrival guaranteed.
