The betta fish is one of the most popular and most misunderstood freshwater species. This guide covers everything from proper tank size to the truth about tank mates.
Maintain these water conditions for optimal health and vibrant colors
Offered here as a female of the Wild Smaragdina "Guitar" line, this is a wild-type emerald betta that keeps the green sheen of the smaragdina group without the flowing finnage of fancy show strains. Females tend to be the steadier, slightly more sociable sex, which makes this a useful choice for keepers planning a thoughtfully stocked, well-planted aquarium.
Expect a top-dwelling labyrinth fish that reaches around 6.5 cm and lives for about three years. Its diet is insectivorous, so small live or frozen invertebrate foods suit it far better than a plant-based menu. Although described as semi-aggressive, a female in a generously sized, heavily planted tank is usually manageable when tankmates are picked with care.
A densely planted 20-litre aquarium (or larger) with plenty of broken sightlines gives this betta the security it wants. Keep the water soft to moderately hard and warm, and provide surface cover so it can rest near the top. Hardness from 1 to 10 dGH suits her, and a gently filtered tank that mimics quiet, slow-moving water is closer to her natural conditions than a high-flow setup.
A common question is how big this fish gets: females of this line grow to around 6.5 cm, a touch larger than many fancy bettas, so the planting and footprint should be scaled accordingly. With consistent feeding of small invertebrate foods and stable warmth, she should reach a typical age of about three years in good health.
Best results come from a planted tank shared with peaceful small fish such as small rasboras, plus peaceful snails, and shrimp only where this betta is not inclined to hunt them. Avoid other male bettas, fin-nipping or large boisterous fish, long-finned species, very small fry and any highly territorial neighbours. Every Wild Smaragdina Guitar female is shipped with a licensed live-animal courier and backed by our live arrival guarantee.
