Overview

The Male Halfmoon Plakat Super Red Betta is a stunning colour form of Betta splendens, prized for its intense red body and fins, compact plakat shape, and confident personality. This is a labyrinth fish, meaning it can breathe atmospheric air from the surface as well as through its gills, which helps it thrive in calm, warm aquariums. The plakat variety has shorter fins than traditional long-finned bettas, making it more agile and often better suited to active swimming and gentle exercise.

With the dramatic halfmoon tail spread and rich super red colouration, this fish is a standout centrepiece for a carefully planned aquarium. It is best kept singly, in a peaceful setup with stable water conditions, plenty of cover, and low water flow. When cared for correctly, a male betta can become interactive and recognisable, often learning to respond to feeding and movement at the glass.

At Tropical Fish Co, we select healthy specimens and pack them with care for fast UK delivery. Every fish is covered by our live arrival guarantee, giving you confidence when ordering online.

Origin & Natural Habitat

Betta splendens originates from the warm, slow-moving waters of Thailand and surrounding parts of mainland South-East Asia. In the wild, bettas inhabit shallow rice paddies, marshes, floodplains, ditches and sluggish streams where vegetation is dense and the water is often low in oxygen. Their labyrinth organ is an adaptation to these conditions, allowing them to gulp air from the surface when needed.

The natural habitat is typically warm, calm and heavily planted, with leaf litter, roots and floating vegetation providing shelter. This helps explain why domestic bettas do best in aquariums that mimic these conditions: warm water, gentle filtration, soft planting and minimal surface disturbance. Although selectively bred colour forms such as the super red halfmoon plakat are not found in the wild, their care requirements remain rooted in the biology of the species.

Tank Setup & Water Parameters

A single male betta should be housed alone, as males are territorial and will usually fight with other males and often with similarly shaped or brightly coloured fish. A tank of 40 litres or more is recommended to provide stable water conditions and enough room for planting and enrichment. Bigger is always better, especially if you want to maintain excellent water quality and reduce stress.

Use a secure lid, as bettas can jump, and keep the water level a little below the top to allow access to the surface. Gentle filtration is ideal; strong currents can stress a plakat betta and make it difficult for the fish to rest near the surface. Sponge filters, adjustable internal filters, or baffled outflows work well.

Decor should include broad-leaved live plants, floating plants, driftwood and smooth hides. Avoid sharp ornaments or rough plastic plants that may damage delicate fins. A dark substrate and dense planting can help the super red colour really stand out while also making the fish feel secure. Stable heating is essential, with a reliable aquarium heater maintaining 23–27°C. Aim for a pH between 6.0 and 7.8, with soft to moderately hard water being suitable.

Regular maintenance is important. Perform partial water changes each week and keep ammonia and nitrite at zero. Bettas are hardy, but they are still sensitive to poor water quality, especially in smaller aquariums. A mature, cycled tank will give the best results and help your fish settle quickly after arrival.

Feeding Guide

Betta splendens are primarily carnivorous and need a protein-rich diet. A high-quality betta pellet should form the staple, with frozen or live foods offered regularly to support colour, condition and natural feeding behaviour. Good options include bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and mosquito larvae, provided they are sourced safely.

Feed small amounts once or twice daily, only what the fish can consume in a couple of minutes. Overfeeding can quickly lead to bloating and poor water quality. Because bettas have relatively small stomachs, it is better to offer measured portions than large meals. A varied diet helps maintain the intense super red colouration and overall vitality.

Occasional fasting days can be beneficial, especially if the fish has been fed heavily. Always remove uneaten food promptly to keep the aquarium clean.

Tank Mates / Compatibility

Male bettas are best kept as solitary fish. They should not be housed with other male bettas, and care should be taken with tank mates that have long fins, bright colours or similar body shapes, as these can trigger aggression. Fast, nippy fish are also unsuitable because they may harass the betta or damage its fins.

In a suitably sized, well-planted aquarium, some peaceful companions may be possible, but compatibility depends on the individual fish’s temperament. If you are new to bettas, the safest and most rewarding option is a species-only setup. This allows the fish to display naturally, reduces stress and makes feeding and maintenance much easier.

When choosing companions, always monitor behaviour closely and be prepared to separate fish if any chasing, fin nipping or persistent flaring occurs. A calm environment is the key to long-term success with this species.
