Overview

Mini Cory (Gastrodermus nanus, syn. Corydoras nanus), also known as the Light-Spot Catfish, is a tiny, peaceful bottom-dweller from soft, shaded South American streams, ideal for planted community aquariums with fine substrate and a social group. Native to Suriname and French Guiana, this species is prized for its manageable size, peaceful nature, and fascinating schooling behavior. Now available for sale UK from Tropical Fish Co, this charming nano catfish is ideal for the planted aquarium enthusiast.

Appearance

The Mini Cory typically reaches around 3.5 cm in total length, making it one of the smallest corydoras species. The body is robust and armored, with a pale silver or beige base color marked with subtle light spots along the flanks, giving the species its "Light-Spot" common name. The fins are delicate and transparent. Healthy specimens have bright, clear eyes and smooth, undamaged barbels and armor plates.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, Gastrodermus nanus is native to the Suriname and Maroni River basins in Suriname and the Iracoubo River basin in French Guiana. These waters are typically soft, warm, and slightly acidic, with sandy or muddy substrates and dense aquatic vegetation providing cover. Light levels are low due to the forest canopy and tannin-stained water. The fish spend much of their time foraging on the substrate for small invertebrates and organic detritus.

Aquarium Setup

A well-planted aquarium of at least 54 litres is recommended for a small group of Mini Corys. Use a soft sandy substrate to protect their delicate barbels, and incorporate plenty of live plants, driftwood, smooth rocks, and leaf litter to provide cover and foraging opportunities. Ensure good filtration and gentle water movement to maintain high oxygen levels. Subdued lighting and minimal water movement will help the fish settle and display their best natural behavior.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22-26°C
  • pH: 6.0-7.5
  • Hardness: Soft water preferred
  • Filtration: Gentle flow, excellent water quality essential

Feeding

The Mini Cory is an omnivore and thrives on a varied sinking diet. Offer quality micro pellets or wafers as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live small invertebrates such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp, plus occasional blanched vegetable matter. Feed once or twice daily in small amounts, ensuring food reaches the bottom where the fish naturally forage.

Behaviour

This catfish is peaceful, active, and social, constantly on the move and best kept in a group of at least six individuals. When kept in proper numbers, the Mini Cory is confident and displays natural schooling behavior. They spend much of their time foraging on the substrate, and are most active during the day. Males may engage in courtship displays, but serious aggression is rare.

Top Tip: Keep on soft sand or very smooth fine substrate to protect the barbels. Avoid sharp gravel. Provide clean, well-oxygenated water, gentle current, and shaded areas with leaf litter or cover. Best kept in groups of six or more.

Tank Mates

The Mini Cory is suitable for a peaceful nano or community aquarium with other small fish. Good tankmates include small peaceful community fish, tetras, rasboras, small livebearers, and dwarf cichlids with gentle temperament. Avoid large predatory fish, aggressive cichlids, fin-nippers, very boisterous bottom dwellers, and large loaches that may outcompete or stress them.

Breeding

Breeding the Mini Cory is achievable with careful preparation. Spawning is similar to other corys: condition with rich live or frozen foods, then trigger with a cooler water change and slightly softer water. Eggs are usually laid on glass, plants, or decor. Adults may eat eggs, so remove them after spawning for best success.
