The Corydoras concolor is a peaceful, attractive bottom-dwelling corydoras catfish that thrives in groups and adds constant activity to soft, well-maintained community aquariums. Native to the upper Amazon basin, especially Peru and adjacent parts of western Brazil, this compact species grows to around 3.5 cm in captivity. At Tropical Fish Co, we supply healthy juveniles that adapt quickly to aquarium life and reward attentive care with years of engaging, social behavior.
Corydoras concolor displays a uniform pale cream or tan base color with minimal patterning, earning it the "concolor" (same color) name. The body is compact and armored, with a rounded snout and sensitive barbels. The fins are semi-translucent with faint pigmentation. Under subdued lighting, a subtle iridescence may appear along the flanks. Juveniles at 2–3 cm show the same understated coloration as adults.
This species inhabits slow-moving tributaries and flooded forest zones of the upper Amazon basin with soft, acidic water. The substrate is fine sand or mud, and the environment is heavily shaded by overhanging vegetation and leaf litter. Water temperatures are stable between 24–27 °C, and the water is well-oxygenated with minimal current. Replicating these soft-water conditions at home encourages natural behavior and optimal health.
An 80-litre aquarium is suitable for a group of five to seven. Use soft sand or very smooth substrate to protect the barbels; avoid sharp gravel. Décor should include driftwood, rounded stones, and live plants. Floating plants help diffuse lighting. Keep in a proper group, as they are much more active and confident when shoaled, and maintain excellent water quality with regular water changes.
Corydoras concolor is an omnivore. Offer a varied sinking diet of quality corydoras pellets or wafers, frozen or live small foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp, plus occasional blanched vegetable matter. Feed after lights dim if necessary. Feed once or twice daily in small portions.
These catfish are highly social and must be kept in a proper group. A well-adjusted shoal will actively forage across the substrate throughout the day. They are peaceful and compatible with a wide range of soft-water community fish.
Ideal companions include small peaceful tetras, rasboras, dwarf gouramis, livebearers with calm tankmates, and small peaceful loaches. Avoid large aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping barbs, large predatory fish, or very boisterous or territorial species.
Spawns in a group or pair with slightly cooler, softer water changes often helping trigger breeding. Provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops; eggs are usually laid on glass, plants, or décor and should be removed to prevent predation. Males are slightly smaller and more streamlined. Fry require infusoria or liquid fry food initially.
