The Corydoras sodalis is a peaceful, social Amazonian corydoras catfish for sale UK that adds constant bottom activity and thrives in a well-kept community aquarium. Native to the Amazon River basin, especially Loreto, Peru and Amazonas, Brazil, this species grows to around 6 cm in captivity. Its easy care requirements and active personality make it a perfect addition to planted community aquariums. At Tropical Fish Co, we supply healthy juveniles that adapt quickly to aquarium life and reward attentive care with years of engaging, social behavior.
Corydoras sodalis displays a pale cream or silver base color with subtle darker banding or mottling along the flanks. The body is slightly more elongated than typical Corydoras, with a rounded snout and sensitive barbels. The fins are semi-translucent with faint pigmentation, and the dorsal fin is upright and well defined. Under subdued lighting, the subtle patterning provides gentle camouflage against natural décor. Juveniles at 3 cm show the same understated coloration as adults, which remains consistent throughout their lifespan.
This species inhabits slow-moving tributaries and flooded forest zones of the Amazon basin with soft, acidic water. The substrate is fine sand or mud, and the environment is heavily shaded by overhanging vegetation and leaf litter. Water temperatures are stable between 22–26 °C, and the water is well-oxygenated with minimal current. Corydoras sodalis is a diurnal species, actively foraging during daylight hours in small groups. Replicating these soft-water conditions at home encourages natural behavior and optimal health.
A 60-litre aquarium is suitable for a group of five to seven Corydoras sodalis. Keep on soft sand or very smooth substrate to protect the barbels; avoid sharp gravel. Décor should include driftwood, rounded stones, and live plants such as Java fern, Anubias, and Amazon swords. Floating plants help diffuse lighting and create shaded zones. Provide excellent water quality with regular water changes and robust filtration. A secure lid is recommended, as Corydoras occasionally dart to the surface for gulps of air.
Corydoras sodalis is an omnivore that thrives on a varied sinking diet. Offer quality catfish pellets or wafers, frozen or live worms, small crustaceans, and other meaty foods; supplement with occasional vegetable-based foods as part of a balanced diet. Feed once or twice daily in small portions, ensuring food reaches the substrate before mid-water fish consume it. Sinking foods prevent competition and allow the catfish to forage naturally along the bottom.
These catfish are highly social and must be kept in a proper group of at least five individuals to display confident, natural behavior. In smaller numbers they become shy and stressed, spending most of their time hidden. A well-adjusted shoal will actively forage across the substrate throughout the day, sifting sand through their gills and occasionally resting on plant leaves or driftwood. They are peaceful and compatible with a wide range of community fish.
Ideal companions include small peaceful community fish such as tetras (neon, cardinal, rummy-nose), rasboras (harlequin, chili), dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma), and livebearers (guppies, platies). Avoid housing with large predatory fish, aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping species, very boisterous bottom-dwellers, or species that outcompete it for food.
Breeding is similar to other Corydoras: condition with rich foods, perform cooler water changes to trigger spawning, and provide fine-leaved plants or spawning surfaces for egg deposition. Adults may eat eggs, so remove them after spawning. Males are slightly smaller and more streamlined than the plumper females. Fry require infusoria or liquid fry food initially, graduating to micro-worms and finely crushed flake within a week.
