Overview

Linn's Haplochromis, scientifically known as Nimbochromis linni, is a striking, predatory Lake Malawi cichlid that grows into a bold centrepiece fish for large African cichlid aquariums. Available for freshwater fish for sale UK, this species reaches up to 25cm in length and requires a tank of at least 300 litres. Endemic to Lake Malawi, Linn's Haplochromis is best suited to experienced aquarists seeking large, semi-aggressive cichlids with impressive appearance.

Appearance

A large, robust fish with striking coloration. Males develop intense colours with bold patterning. The body is deep and powerful, with well-developed fins. Females are more subdued.

Natural Habitat

Endemic to Lake Malawi, East Africa. Inhabits rocky and sandy areas. Lake Malawi is known for its hard, alkaline water.

Aquarium Setup

A minimum tank size of 300 litres is essential. Use fine sand substrate, create rockscape with caves and open swimming areas. Filtration must be extremely robust. Maintain hard, alkaline water (pH 7.5-8.6).

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24-28°C
  • pH: 7.5-8.6
  • Care Level: Moderate
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive
  • Adult Size: 25cm
  • Minimum Tank Size: 300 litres

Feeding

Carnivorous. Feed quality cichlid pellets, frozen or live foods such as shrimp, krill, mysis, earthworms, and other meaty items. Avoid overfeeding.

Behaviour

Predatory, semi-aggressive. Males are territorial. Juveniles may be less aggressive, but adults can become quite assertive.

Tank Mates

Suitable: large Lake Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament, large Synodontis catfish, other robust Malawi cichlids only in very large, carefully managed tanks. Avoid small fish, shrimp, peaceful community fish, slow-moving or long-finned fish, and much smaller cichlids.

Top Tip: Requires hard, alkaline water with excellent filtration and stable conditions. Best kept in a species tank or with other large Malawi cichlids.

Breeding

Maternal mouthbrooder. Males court females over spawning sites, and females incubate eggs in the mouth until release.
